Looking for a rewarding outdoor adventure during your stay at Nikau Lodge? Mount Fyffe offers sweeping views over Kaikōura, its peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. Whether you walk to the lookout, stop at the hut or continue to the summit, it’s a chance to see our beautiful coastline from a different perspective.

Great view of the Peninsula

How high is Mount Fyffe?

Mount Fyffe’s summit stands 1,602 metres above sea level. On a clear day, the views can stretch as far as Banks Peninsula and the North Island. DOC lists the summit walk as approximately 14 kilometres return, taking around eight hours—a full day out for fit walkers.

For a shorter adventure, allow around five hours return to Mount Fyffe Hut. The lookout near the firepond, about an hour’s climb from the car park, provides another option. Allow extra time for breaks, photographs and your own walking pace.

What is the track like?

The main route follows a steep gravel and four-wheel-drive track up the mountain. Expect a sustained uphill climb, with rougher ground above the hut. Loose stones can make the descent challenging, so sturdy footwear and walking poles are useful.

DOC grades the route as an advanced tramping track. Mountain bikers also use it, so stay aware of others along the way.

Conditions vary with the weather. Check the latest DOC alerts and access-road information before leaving, especially after heavy rain. Higher slopes can have snow or ice, and a sunny morning in Kaikōura does not guarantee good conditions on the mountain.

Mount Fyffe Hut

At approximately 1,100 metres above sea level, Mount Fyffe Hut makes a rewarding destination in its own right and a welcome place to pause before deciding whether to continue uphill.

This small DOC hut has eight bunks, mattresses, heating and a non-flush toilet. Water is available from a tap but is untreated and must be boiled before drinking.

If you plan to stay overnight, book through DOC in advance. Bookings are required all year, and beds are not held for walkers arriving without a reservation. Bring your own sleeping bag, cooking equipment and food.

What to take

Pack for a mountain day, even if the weather feels warm when you set off:

  • Sturdy walking boots or hiking shoes with good grip.

  • A waterproof, windproof jacket and warm layers, including a hat and gloves.

  • Plenty of drinking water, lunch and extra snacks.

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat.

  • A charged phone and an offline map—do not rely on mobile reception.

  • A head torch, first-aid kit and emergency shelter.

  • Walking poles, particularly useful on the descent.

  • A personal locator beacon, especially if walking alone.

For an overnight stay, add a sleeping bag, stove, fuel, cookware and enough food for the trip. Carry all rubbish back out with you.

Plan your day

Start early, check the mountain forecast and tell someone your route and expected return time. Be prepared to turn back if the weather deteriorates or the climb takes longer than expected. Reaching the hut or lookout can be just as satisfying as reaching the summit.

Before travelling, visit the DOC Mount Fyffe track page for current alerts and route information.

After a day on the mountain, return to Nikau Lodge, put your feet up and enjoy a relaxing evening in in Spa.
